What is the Dragon Series?
The RYA Cymru Wales Dragon Series is a regional racing circuit designed to help young sailors grow in confidence on the water. It’s all about:
- Having fun
- Learning by doing
- Meeting other young sailors
And above all, feeling safe and supported
The series runs across South, North, and West Wales, and is perfect for:
- Absolute beginners to racing
- Club sailors who’ve never tried an open event
- Squad sailors wanting more time on the water
You don’t need fancy kit or a polished boat — just basic sailing ability (RYA Stage 2 or equivalent), enthusiasm, and a smile.
Whether you’re part of a club training group or coming on your own, there’s a category for you:
| Fleet | Description |
|---|---|
| Training Fleet | Coached, introductory fleet — perfect for first-timers or sailors who aren’t confident racing on their own yet. You’ll sail shorter courses close to shore with on-water coaching and loads of encouragement. Ideal for building skills and having fun without pressure. |
| Silver Fleet | For sailors who are gaining racing experience and hoping to join next year’s Welsh National Squad. Typically, they’ve done open training or a few regional events. Silver sailors race alongside Gold, but are scored separately. |
| Gold Fleet | For sailors who are already in the Welsh National Squad. This is the most advanced fleet and a great way to challenge yourself against top-level junior racers. |
